Loudr is a browser extension that reads web pages aloud. It is built to keep your reading private.
What Loudr does with page content
When you start reading a page, Loudr extracts the article text locally in your browser and breaks it into sentences. To produce a natural voice, the sentence currently being spoken is sent to Microsoft's text to speech service (speech.platform.bing.com), which returns the audio. Only the text being read is sent, only while you are actively listening, and only when a natural voice is selected.
If you choose a system voice, no text leaves your device at all. Synthesis happens entirely inside your browser or operating system.
What Loudr does not do
- It does not collect, store, or transmit your browsing history.
- It does not send page content anywhere except the voice service above, and only for the sentence being spoken.
- It does not contain analytics, tracking, advertising, or fingerprinting.
- It does not create an account or ask for personal information.
Settings
Your preferences, such as chosen voice and speed, are stored using Chrome's extension storage. If you are signed into Chrome they sync across your own devices through Google's built in sync. They are not sent to us.
Payments
Upgrading to Pro is handled by Dodo Payments, our Merchant of Record. Dodo processes your email and payment details under its own privacy policy and emails you a license key. We never see or store your card details. Loudr only asks Dodo whether a license key you enter is valid.
Permissions
- activeTab and scripting, to read the page you are on and paint highlights, only after you start reading it. Loudr installs asking only for this.
- optional access to the pages you visit, only if you turn on “Suggest listening on articles”, so Loudr can offer a listen button on long reads. It is off unless you enable it, and turning it off removes the access. Loudr still never stores what you read.
- offscreen, to play the audio reliably in the background.
- storage, to remember your voice and speed.
- contextMenus, the right click read aloud entry.
- declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess, to set the request headers the voice endpoint requires, scoped to that endpoint only. It does not read or change your normal browsing.
